Notes from March 29th meeting

First, a big Thankyou to everyone who came along.

The website
Who should be involved in the design and upkeep of the website?

It was agreed that the site would benefit from some kind of messageboard/weblog on the frontpage which should allow members to keep the news up to date, and post comments on the news stories. This isn't hard to setup, and so will be done soon.

Also, the issue of where the website should be hosted was talked about. We will most probably move the website to another, more highly available server in the next week.

Organisational Status
The possibility of registering manchesterwireless as a charity/non-profit was disscussed, the idea being that this could be helpful in dealing with the media, receiving donations of equipment, and also in finding funding.
This isn't immediately important, but I'll see what would need to be done if we choose to follow this route.

Mapping the network
This has been suggested on the mailing list before, and it would be useful to at least do this around all the active nodes to see where how their coverage extends.

To do this we'll need:

  • A laptop with a serial port and decent battery life
  • A standalone GPS
  • Serial cable to connect the two
  • Bike/car/motorbike/van
  • OR
  • A laptop with a USB port
  • A GPS mouse (USB)
  • A power supply (12v battery or cigarette lighter adapter)
  • Car
and of course we'll need to spend a little time getting kismet installed and talking to the USB device so that we can generate the maps.
