Can't get always on internet access? Want to try broadband?
Get involved with Manchester Wireless and help build a broadband network in your own community.

Manchester Wireless are dedicated to setting up a free, public wireless network in Manchester. We believe that the data networks of the future will be as important infrastructure as roads and railways, and it is vital that these networks are not monopolised by a small few, but are run in the interests of the local community.
Manchester Wireless aim to create a city-wide wireless network using freely available off-the-shelf hardware, and free, open-source software.

New forums ready

After several requests and numerous flamewars on the mailing list, I am pleased to announce the launch of the manchesterwireless.net forums.

http://forum.manchesterwireless.net

Hopefully the forums will make it easier for passing visitors and newbies to ask for help in a less techie environment. The forums should also provide a slightly more attractive interface for finding answers to frequently asked questions.

The mailing list will continue as normal - I'll keep and eye on how the list traffic changes, maybe summarising useful threads from the forum. We/I do eventually intend to add a wiki for the website, but until that happens, It would be great if people would contribute their expertise by writing up simple solutions to Wi-Fi problems they've encountered.

If you have a guide to contribute, no matter how small (ie. a photo with explanation is good enough), then please stick it in the Howto section.

So, please take a look at the forums, and get posting!

Many thanks to Joel for his kind hosting of the website.

Meeting report

The meeting went well with many new faces turning up, and a lot of talk about how manchesterwireless can improve, and move forward in the future. With representatives from Digcoop, the Knowledge Media Institute, redbricks, Homes 4 Change, Community Media, Shefnet, 3-C, Consume Leeds, and guadawireless, there was plenty of technical and social discussion on the future of community networks.

Thanks go to Gareth for being the quickest off the mark to get some meeting photos online - more can be found here
