As part of the launch of one of our Longsight nodes, and as a catalyst for some local networking action, we will be webcasting the Sunday 4th helpyourselfmanchester gig live from Slade Hall.

Right now planning is in the early stages, and we'd appreciate as much help as we can get. If you've got just a modicum of video knowledge, a spare webcam, or just fancy coming down to see the bands, email me
Another meeting is well overdue, and thankfully Harry has buckled first, calling a meeting at the Three Arrows for Tuesday 28th of June.
Directions for the Three Arrows can be found here. As usual, newcomers are welcome, expect a healthy mix of friendly people and geeky technology.
After much fiddling with configuration files, one of our Longsight nodes has gone live. The access point is just opposite St Agnes church on Slade Lane.
If you're within range, you should be able to connect to the "manchesterwireless.net" network, and get an IP via DHCP. Fire up your webrowser, agree to the acceptable usage policy, and you'll be able to use the node for net access.
I've done some very rough maps of the coverage area - if you point a directional antenna at the access point, you should be able to connect from much further away than indicated in the picture.

If you're in the area and want some help getting connected, let us know on the mailing list, and we should be able to help you out.
To promote the launch of this node, we're planning some events to show what a community wireless network is capable of - next Sunday we will be streaming a gig live from Slade Hall - on the Internet AND the wireless network. Stay tuned for more details.
We've been doing a lot of work recently with the Linksys WRT54G, and they certainly make cheap and versatile linux APs. One problem however, is they need a fair bit of protection if they are to be used outdoors.
One group that's had success using WRT54Gs outdoors is sveasoft - and they've produced a fantastic writeup dedtailing how to armor the WRT54G for outdoor use.
